Senior Fired Equipment Mechanical Engineer

Summary

Bechtel is seeking to work with a major Indian corporation to provide Project Management Consultant (PMC) Services and Engineering Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) Services for offsites and utilities (OSBL) for a multi-billion-dollar upgrade / expansion of their existing petrochemical facilities in India. The PMC Services will be led out of India with personnel deployed in Mumbai region, the project sites in India, as well as several key contractor locations across India. The EPCM Services for OSBL will be led out of Bechtel’s India offices. Both scopes are substantial with multi-million job-hours estimated across both scopes.

 

Candidate is responsible for assigned activities within the Mechanical engineering discipline on the project.  Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices.  Makes decisions independently concerning problems within the discipline. Represents the discipline on the project with Contractors and Owner to resolve technical questions and as required to coordinate work.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Oversees and monitors Contractors’ engineering progress for fired equipment (Process Fired Heaters, Cracking Furnaces, Thermal Oxidizers, Incinerators, Boilers and Flare packages, etc.)
  • Reviews the design scope and deliverables of specific discipline to ensure Contractors perform all work to agreed standards for safety, health, and environment.
  • Develops Engineering Procedures, design guides, specifications, instructions, philosophies, and design criteria.
  • Works with other lead discipline engineers to ensure that all interfaces between disciplines are clearly defined and recorded.
  • Coordinates with other leaders to ensure that multi-discipline interfaces are properly addressed with resolution of technical issues and conflicting design requirements in a timely manner.
  • Provides technical oversight for fired equipment by conducting review of the following deliverables, design reviews and tasks: Mechanical Equipment Specifications, Mechanical Equipment Datasheets, Material Requisitions for Quote and Purchase, Technical Bid Evaluations, Inspection and Test Plans, Vendor document review, Inspection reports, etc.
  • Coordinates and participates in reviews of Contractors’ engineering documents/deliverables within discipline to ensure compliance with the contract requirements, including project procedures, project specifications and applicable codes and standards. Monitors status of Contractor documents reviews for discipline
  • Provide necessary support to Equipment list, P&ID, HAZOP/HAZID, Model reviews, studies, etc.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to project management.
  • Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators).
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment supported by leadership which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • Participates in project technical reviews, progress, and review meetings.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Applicant must have Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • More than 10 yrs of Fired Equipment design experience, relevant to oil, gas and chemicals related design engineering. Applicant must have gained experience working either with an EPC/EPCM contractor, or a fired equipment manufacturer. Additional experience such as PMC, petrochemical, systems startup, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms is a plus.
  • A Professional Engineering license or Chartered Engineer status in an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, from a recognized licensing board or engineering council preferred.
  • Applicant must have experience with different types of fired/combustion equipment such as process fired heaters, flares, thermal oxidizers / incinerators, boilers, WHRU, etc. Strong knowledge of thermal design, FRNC-5 heater simulation program or an equivalent industry standard simulation software. Knowledge of combustion calculations, draft loss calculations, 1 phase and 2 phase pressure drop calculations for fired equipment. Strong working knowledge of fired equipment controls, Burner Management System & other controls related to fired equipment. Knowledge of the design of proprietary technology furnaces such as reformers, ethylene crackers and coker furnaces is a plus.
  • Experience in writing equipment design specifications for fired equipment.
  • Through knowledge of applicable API / ISO standards, NFPA regulations and any other relevant industry codes and standards.
  • Experience with field installation / commissioning activities for fired equipment is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of the application of Engineering to plant constructability as applied to construction methods and materials.
  • Thorough understanding of the roles played by other departments on projects including construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication. Able to work in project groups with shared-work teams globally, to progress project designs.
